A new RAND study found that 60 percent of American adults now live with at least one chronic condition; 42 percent have more than one. They account for hundreds of billions of dollars in health care spending every year. The problem is only going to get more urgent. Chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure increase with age and when left untreated, chronic diseases can be debilitating and reduce a person’s quality of life.
What if we spend a small percentage of effort and resources on creating health rather than managing disease? To take a pill is the alternative if the conditions have become acute or if one is not ready to change and take responsibility of one’s health. unfortunately, the state of our health is deterioriated to such a point that taking a pill has become the norm rather than the alternative.
Western Medicine treats every symptom as acute instead of progression of a chronic illness that can be cured and prevented with diet and lifestyle choices.
That’s where Ayurvedic medicine fills the gap.
We create disease by what we eat, how we live, how we handle our thoughts and emotions, our lifestyle and our interaction with the environment. What’s needed is education and guidance on how to create better health with nutrition, lifestyle choices and other holistic approaches. This is necessary and should be our primary care.
Disease has its purpose; it’s a wake up call for many. But too many times, the disease has progressed to a stage where our options become limited. Why wait till then? Why not take measures to prevent the illness that is manifesting in your body right now? It’s much easier to prevent the illness than to cure it.
I have seen far too many patients suffering from the side effecrs of over prescribed drugs; far too many premature surgeries with life long side effects, far too many patients treated like a number without being heard and sent away with another script and told that it was all in their head; far too many who are left scared and overwhelmed by a specialist lacking wisdom or consciousness. The compassion, the whole big picture of the patient, and the total mind/body understanding is missing. It’s time to change that. When we rely heavily on testing to understand what ‘s wrong with the patient we are undermining our body’s intelligence. What’s really wrong won’t show up in x-rays or blood tests.
Just changing one habit whether it involves food, or a lifestyle habit can move us towards creating health and away from disease. Preventing disease is a process like that, where little by little we move towards creating health and away from THAT cancer that you won't have.
Ayurveda raises the bar on health and prevention. Prevention is not early detection tests; it’s about never having to do the tests. Frankly, if you detected it, you didn’t prevent it. Prevention begins way before that, in our choices about what we put in our mouth, our mind and our senses.
But how can we make those choices when we don’t even know they exist? That’s where learning, educating oneself is needed. Big part of my time spent with you is educating you.
Now more than ever, we must rise to that challenge and not take the easy way out, but take the right way out and take charge of our health. Ultimately our health is our responsibility. Anything short of that will leave us at the mercy of the pill and profit driven medical culture. When we don’t have the health we can have, our entire life becomes meaningless and we suffer. With Ayurveda, you can reduce the symptoms of your chronic conditions, or cure them all together and prevent it’s occurrence in the future.
